Review of Divine Back cover copy: "At the crossroads of her life, only one power set Mary free and gave her a lifetime of love and hope. A power that could only be Divine." With all the conjecture going on these days about Mary Magdalene (and if you’ve missed out on this, you’ve been living in a cave, or you have just returned from the wilds of Africa, or you have just returned from a cave in the wilds of Africa), Karen Kingsbury’s modern-day rendition offers a fresh look at the relationship between Mary and Jesus. A relationship built on spiritual romance, rather than physical. Kingsbury’s style is fairly simplistic, but tender and endearing. She reveals Mary’s hurts, her struggles, and the impossibility of rescuing herself from her own pain. Through the telling of this story, Kingsbury helps the reader to relate with Mary Magdalene in her anguish as well as in her salvation. I give this 4 ½ stars for the message in this book – the need for a Divine Savior. In many ways it’s a difficult story to read (Kingsbury’s Mary experiences a plethora of trauma and tragedy beginning as a ten year old child), but the message of redemption is worth the journey. I recommend this as a great follow-up book to The Da Vinci Code.
