I loved this movie because I'm a writer. I loved this movie because I'm currently working on my first novel. And I loved this movie because I'm an Emma Thompson fan. My husband put up with this movie because he likes hanging out with me. And because I was willing to share my big bowl of popcorn.
Ergo, I give it three and a half stars.
The Gist: IRS agent Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) wakes up one morning to discover a running commentary in his head--a narration--of his life, such as it is. The narration is at first annoying and he verbally bats at the voice as one might a pesky fly. Things turn decidedly worse for Harold, however, when he hears his own death being foreshadowed by the voice, who turns out to be real-life troubled author Karen Eiffel (Thompson). Harold has to find Eiffel in time to prevent the final scene from being written and Eiffel must decide on whether to sacrifice a long-stagnant career or the true life of her fictional protagonist.
Stranger Than Fiction is quirky, cute, and cleverly executed. In my opinion, Thompson steals the show with her rendition of an eccentric author. Will Ferrell is refreshingly realistic and (ahem) fully clothed.
This movie is definitely not for everyone. It moves at a fairly slow clip and demands a well-developed suspension of disbelief of the viewers. Just make a big bowl of popcorn ahead of time; it really does help.
Well, I have been wanting to see it... I reserved it at the library and I'm
like, number 294 on the waiting list. That means I'll get it somewhere
around 2015. Guess I'll have to pony up the four bucks and actually rent
it.
My "I hate dramas" hubby enjoyed this a lot, and of course I loved it,
because I'm also a writer.
