My great friend and writing buddy, Laura Christianson, has been teaching me a thing or two lately. She teaches workshops at conferences on subjects like blogging, writing press releases, and anything adoption related. She's got a fun project in the works regarding blogging -- more on that later; just know it's going to be fun.

Lately she's been teaching me how to be a journalist. As a still somewhat newbie writer (I've been doing this gig for about four years), I've tried to consume as much information as possible from Laura, who taught high school English as well as high school journalism classes for many years. She is one smart chick.

No, I'm not going away from my nonfiction/fiction endeavors. I'm still working on my novel, hoping to finish it up in the next few months. I've just realized something most writers need to come to grips with eventually: freelance work is a great way to pay for your book-writing habit.  And I've actually had a lot of fun wearing my journalist cap.

So it is with great pleasure I direct you to Today's Christian website where I've got an article published this month titled, In Their Shoes. I give thanks to the little people in my life, namely Laura, for making me the writer I am today (I think she actually queried the article for me and everything - she really is a great friend).

So for all you newbie writers out there: sometimes you have to take the paying gigs to finance the fun stuff (books, writers conference fees, book marketing, etc.). Do yourself a favor and find someone to teach you about the craft of writing, be it through a book, a class, a workshop, or a conference. Laura will be offering some of her workshops via cd in the near future I'm told. Check out her website for more information. I guess I can share her with you. Just remember though: she's still my writing buddy.

Gee, you make me sound so well-rounded! It was a nice surprise to check my computer this morning and discover this post that says all kinds of glowing things about little old me.

I was so excited to see your article in Today's Christian. Mac will be thrilled, too. Thanks for being such a "teachable" student and for teaching me to be a better title writer, to use more humor, and just to enjoy life more!
