Jars of Clay
Dan Haseltine, Charlie Lowell, Stephen Mason and Matt Odmark
A couple weeks ago I attended my first Jars of Clay concert. It's definitely not going to be my last. Besides putting on a great fair concert (that there's saying something), their christian alternative rock reputation evidently follows them on the road. They are described as as group that "presents the message of Christ to the world in a way that is both relevant to the culture and uncompromising in personal and artistic integrity."
Oh to be defined as a Christian like that. Relevant and Uncompromising. Oh, and Artistic. That would be nice too.
Since 1995 Jars of Clay has produced eight studio albums, including their brand spankin' new CD, Good Monsters. They've gotten married, started families, traveled across the world, succeeded, failed, been tempted, been on the mountaintop, and down in the valleys. And they've grown up.
Refreshingly, these guys are all in their early/mid 30's. They've moved beyond the initial "discovery" zone of fame and have made some real strides with their lyrics. It's true, they're relevant, uncompromising, and very artistic. Their lyrics are thoughtful and philosophical, with imagery and symbolism woven throughout.
Honestly? They're really good. Unfortunately, I only personally own one Jars CD. Guess I've got a lot of catching up to do.

** side note: one of my friends, Anne (waving at Anne!) who attended the concert with me, surprised me a week later with an authentic Matt Odmark guitar pick. Sigh. Gotta love good friends. . . . .(Mark's the one in the back with the red tie)

Oh yes, I love JOC! I'm a fan of several Christian rock bands. I like them
better than the traditional CCM stuff. Glad you had fun at the concert!
(I'm going to a concert tomorrow... Third Day and David Crowder Band...
will be blogging about it!)
