Review of Three Weeks with My Brother

Three and a half stars to novelist Nicholas Sparks and his memoir, Three Weeks With My Brother. Because I'm such a nosy cuss, I love reading this type of “behind the scenes" matter. In this 2004 nonfiction piece, Sparks recounts a once-in-a-lifetime type of trip he undertakes with the last remaining member of his family––his brother, Micah.

As the two brothers meander through countries like Cambodia, Peru, Ethiopia, Guatemala, and others, they also wander through the difficult years of their childhood and visit the grief they’ve collectively experienced in the last several years as they’ve witnessed the deaths of their father, mother, and younger sister.

A fan of Sparks , I enjoyed reading the history behind some of his fictional characters. It was also refreshing to get a glimpse into the family life of a best-selling American author. Sparks is transparent in his pain and tragedy; his relationship with his brother is both admirable and enviable. Some readers are disturbed by the Sparks brothers’ boyish antics, but I thought it lent credibility to the story and offered moments of levity in the midst of some painful soul searching.

Again, Sparks ’ writing is less than stellar, but I appreciate his honesty and devotion to his family. This is a good book for those who are also of the curious-inclined bent and want to get to know this young author a little better.
